Around 2.5 million families are currently separated, and there are about 4 million children growing up in those families. That means millions of young people experience their parents living apart.
Of those separated families, about 63% have a child maintenance arrangement in place, helping to support daily expenses, schooling, and normal family life.
There are also 3.2 million lone-parent families in the UK. While the majority are headed by mothers, around 15 to 16% are headed by fathers.
